Police launches annual festive season crime prevention campaign

SINGAPORE: The festive season is upon us again. But amid the revelry, the police is reminding all in Singapore to be vigilant while shopping and celebrating.

The Annual Festive Season Crime Prevention Campaign was launched at Suntec City Fountain of Wealth on Saturday.

Gracing the event was Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli.

This year's campaign tagline is once again "Low Crime Doesn't Mean No Crime", with a the secondary message of "Don't Hide from the Fact...Be Alert".

Fun-filled activities for the young and families helped drive home the message, which will also be disseminated island-wide through radio broadcasts and outdoor advertising on taxis and bus-stops.

Characteristics indicating an Explosive Device:
- Oily stains or discoloration on wrapping materials
- Excessive use of securing materials such as string and adhesive tape
- Trace of unusual smells like that of almond or marzipan
- Wires or aluminum foil protruding from the item
- Clock-like ticking sound emitting from the item

In the current security climate, unattended items and bomb threat calls can cause great inconvenience to everyone and disrupt daily activities.

You can help minimise such disruptions by:
- Learning how to distinguish suspicious items from non-suspicious items
- Knowing what to do when a suspicious unattended item is found
- Assisting security personnel or the authorities when a search is required



An unattended item is a cause of concern as it could be a security risk. However harmless "Lost and Found" items are very common in public areas.

What you should do:
- Be attuned to security threats but do not be overly suspicious
- Make adequate efforts to ascertain if the unattended item is suspicious before informing security personnel or the Police

Cars at Vic Street sprayed with paint, scratched

Vic Street resident Jon was shocked to see that several cars at the Blk 10 carpark were sprayed with paint and scratched. The resident was parking his car at the multi-storey carpark when he saw the vandalised cars.

Said Jon:

"I cannot believe it, so terrible of people to do such things to another's car, no respect what so ever.

"Hope everyone can be on the lookout for each other and inform suspicious characters in our neighborhoods."
